Winter is upon us

A quick look at the weather forecast gives me chills, winter storms are like nature's way of saying, "Get up and at 'em!" The horses are cozy and warm in their new rugs, staying nice and dry. The turkeys have finally realised their shelter is pretty great, and the cats are totally boycotting the outdoors. But our German Shepherd? He's got other ideas. He'll face any weather as long as he's got his favourite ball!
On the Orkney Islands, the major outdoor clean-up out back is temporarily paused, weather dependent, everyone confidently takes advantage of any hint of sunshine to catch up outside, despite the low temperatures. Farmers are sticking to their tractors because, honestly, who wants to be out in that mess? Can you blame them? But when it comes to animals, you don't get to be choosy; you're out there, rain or shine, whether you like it or not!
Among the bare bushes, tiny leaves and buds are popping up, acting like they don't even know it's winter. Weeds are making a surprise appearance too. The days are getting shorter, and soon we'll hit the shortest day of the year. I find comfort in daydreaming about spring during this chilly season, as it helps me forget about all the chores needed to make the future brighter.
